Background
Polina arrived in Dundee through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, having built her career in Ukraine as a teacher and economist. Looking to rebuild her professional life in a new country, she joined Code Division’s 6-week SQA-accredited Data and Excel course, led by industry expert Emily. Her goal was simple: refresh her skills and gain confidence.

A Turning Point
What Polina found was far more than she expected. Emily’s teaching opened up a completely new way of thinking about data—making complex tools feel approachable and useful. What started as a desire to improve her Excel skills quickly became a passion for working with data.

“I thought I was just learning Excel, but it was so much more. It helped me believe in myself again. I realised data is something I can understand—and actually enjoy.”

Career Change
With her confidence rebuilt, Polina applied for a new role and was soon hired by St Andrews University. One short course didn’t just update her skills—it transformed her outlook, opened doors, and sparked a new chapter.
